Sangeet: stage, sound and the curfew

The night both families compete, and the night your production budget is decided.

The Sangeet is the most expensive night of the week to build and the one with the hardest stop time. Marrakech venues have noise limits, and outdoor amplified sound usually has to be down by midnight or one, depending on the property and how close the neighbours are.

The stage is a build, not a hire

A Sangeet stage with a backdrop, lighting rig and LED wall is a two day build in most Marrakech venues, and it has to come down before the mandap goes up. That sequencing is the reason the Sangeet and the wedding day are almost never in the same courtyard.

Ask your venue what time crews can access the space and whether they can work overnight. Some palaces will not allow build after ten at night because guests are sleeping on site.

Rehearsal time is real time

Families rehearse for months and then arrive expecting a run through. Budget two hours on the stage with the actual sound and lighting, in the afternoon, with the choreographer present. Without it the first three performances are people finding their marks on camera.

The curfew

Outdoor amplified sound in Marrakech is generally permitted until midnight, with extensions to one or two possible at some private estates further out of town. Properties inside the medina or close to residential streets are stricter.

The workaround most families use is to move the last hour indoors, where the limit does not apply, or to choose a palmeraie estate with no close neighbours. We check the specific permission in writing before a venue is confirmed, because a curfew discovered in month nine is a rebuild.

Until what time can you play music at a Marrakech wedding?
Outdoor amplified music is generally allowed until midnight, and some private estates outside the city can extend to one or two in the morning. Venues in or near the medina are stricter because of residential neighbours. Moving the last hour of the party indoors is the usual way round it.
How long does it take to build a Sangeet stage?
Two days for a full stage with backdrop, lighting rig and LED wall, plus a day to strike it. That build and strike is why the Sangeet and the wedding ceremony are usually held in different parts of the venue.
